Dust Characterization
Applications:
The PLM is a powerful, efficient and cost effective method to identify a broad range of microscopic particle types. Our experienced analysts use polarized light imaging techniques to provide a general overview of what is present in the dust from a given sampling site. Visual estimations, reported as percentages, are conducted on each category detected. These categories include, biologicals (pollen, spore-like particles, skin scales, hair, insect parts, etc.), mineral matter (lime, gypsum, quartz, etc.), cellulose fibers, synthetic fibers, glass fibers, paint chips, metallic fragments and soots (oil, wood). Other categories specific to each sample environment will be added as necessary.
Advantages:
PLM analysis produces a report that clearly explains what was detected, how much was detected, and discusses what these findings could indicate. In addition, PLM color digital images, documenting the optical properties and morphology of the dust components in the samples accompany the report. Using SEM and EDS in combination with the PLM, enables a much more detailed understanding of the sample composition. Using the SEM, individual particles can be identified which can distinguish particles that appear opaque or optically identical, as well as provide expanded detail in the specifics of particles observed during the PLM analysis.

Uses for Dust Characterization:
This analysis is often requested in various situations such as, tracking down irritants, potential irritants, or allergens (e.g. molds, pollens, glass fibers, soots), or the sudden appearance of a large volume, an abnormally dark or colored dust noticed in a home, office or perhaps contaminating a product or industrial process. It allows for the composition of any volume of dust to be characterized, assisting clients in determining where potential problems may lie or tracking the changes over time or across multiple sites at a location.
